Abbvie cGMP Clinical Pilot Laboratory

The clinical pilot laboratory is a grassroots pilot plant and clinical supplies facility for high-potency and normal-potency oral solid dosage forms. The facility enables Abbvie’s researchers and operators to safely work with potent drug compounds.

Project Description:

The clinical pilot laboratory is a grassroots pilot plant and clinical supplies facility for high-potency and normal-potency oral solid dosage forms. The facility enables Abbvie’s researchers and operators to safely work with potent drug compounds with occupational exposure limits less than 1μ/m3 using engineered containment.

Due to The Austin Company's relationship with Abbott Laboratories, in addition to Austin's long and successful experience with laboratories and pilot plants, Abbott selected Austin to partner with CE&IC for the design and construction administration of this 60,000 SF cGMP clinical pilot laboratory.

The Austin Company provided front-end architectural planning through exterior and interior detailed design. CE&IC provided MEP services, including integrated manufacturing process and utilities systems design.

Manufacturing operations included wet and dry granulation, milling, blending, compression, coating, encapsulation, and weighing and dispensing. There were multiple scale manufacturing trains for processing of both potencies. Process support systems included USP water, CIP and dust collection. The process equipment was primarily new, with a few existing pieces having been relocated from another Abbott facility.
