Project Description:

Betz Laboratories Inc., an international organization headquartered in Trevose, Pennsylvania, provides engineered chemical programs for treating and controlling industrial water and wastewater systems. The company produces and markets a wide range of engineered programs and specialty chemical products for process systems. The company’s services are used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications, with particular emphasis on the power, chemical, petroleum refining, paper, automotive and steel industries.

Betz commissioned The Austin Company to design, engineer and construct an advanced blending facility used to produce custom-mixed chemicals. The facility houses flammable storage, chemical storage and production operations, and includes administration and warehousing areas. The 36,000 SF facility is located in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Betz’s commitment to safety and environmental protection is reflected throughout the state-of-the-art plant.

The highly-flammable and hazardous nature of the materials processed and stored in the facility made it necessary to equip the building with a variety of fire-detection and fire-suppression systems, including an early-suppression/fast-response (ESFR) automatic sprinkler system.

Added containment provisions, automatic safety systems and advanced air-emission controls were also incorporated into the plant’s design and operations.

Indoor and outdoor loading and unloading areas allow for the all-weather transfer of formulated chemicals to Betz’ tank trucks, as well as the transfer of raw materials to an outdoor tank farm. Trailers are loaded and unloaded in such a way that chemicals go directly from the trucks to their storage containers, avoiding contact with air or humans.

The Cheyenne facility is one of seven projects that The Austin Company has completed for Betz in the United States and Europe. Other projects include the construction of a new European headquarters and laboratory for Betz Europe, Inc. at Haasrode, Belgium, and a warehouse addition in Bakersfield, California.
