Project Description:

This project, awarded to Austin by The Boeing Company through a competitive selection process, involved the planning, design and engineering for a Fitness Center designed to serve the ten-thousand employees at the Long Beach Military production facilities. The project site is at the periphery of the Long Beach Campus, allowing ease of employee access during off-hours and providing an exit strategy for Boeing, should the need arise in the future to sell-off the property. The site was a former storage yard for surplus materials.

The single-story, 14,000 SF project consists of a cardiovascular training area, strength and weight training area, aerobics studio, locker and shower rooms, and administrative spaces. The weight room has a soaring overhead deck with exposed ductwork and pendant lighting fixtures. The room is equipped with cushioned flooring, a sound system, and excellent television viewing angles for members.

Exterior areas include a running trail, basketball courts, tennis courts, and a sand volleyball court. Provisions have been made for future extensions of the fields to include additional tennis courts and a multi-use soccer and football field.

Austin began work on this project in the winter and gained Planning Commission approval early the following year. Austin provided planning; architecture and interior design; and structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, submitting the project to Plan Check in the summer. Construction commenced in September, with Austin providing construction administration services throughout the project, which was completed the following summer.
