Project Description:

FOX 49 KPDX, a Fox affiliate television station owned by Meredith Corporation, relocated operations from downtown Portland, Oregon, to a new broadcast facility in nearby Beaverton.

KPDX decided to build a new broadcast center because its leased facility was not capable of supporting the station’s expanding general business requirements or technological advancements, specifically the switch to digital broadcasting.

KPDX selected The Austin Company to provide planning, design, engineering and construction management services for KPDX’s new 45,800 SF facility. The Austin Company was chosen for the project based on current and recent experience in designing and constructing similar digital television broadcast facilities, as well as its history of successfully completing previous projects for Meredith Corporation.

The first floor of the two-story broadcast center houses a television studio for live production, a news/current affairs studio and a flex studio for smaller shows. A 3,800 SF technical center, also on the first floor, has the capability to support conversion to digital broadcasting. The technical center includes a satellite/master control room, central rack room, post-production edit suite, audio suite, Avid® suites and management information systems room.

The second floor includes open-plan and private offices for management, business, accounting, sales, traffic and engineering functions.

The broadcast center features both an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system and backup generator system to support the electrical and HVAC systems in key technical and production areas.

Development of the three-acre site included a 127-space parking lot and landscaping. The 55 employee parking spaces located east of the building are enclosed by a wrought iron fence with brick pilasters along the western perimeter of the fence.

The building is clad in imperial red brick with accents of castle gray and wheat mix burnished-face concrete block at the coping, window sills and lintels; blue-green tint glazing; and clear anodized window frames and accent panels. The building is highlighted by a “jewel-like” rotunda entry consisting of blue-green glazing and clear anodized mullions accented by a metal canopy, which appears to “float” over the main entrance. The entry is further enhanced in the evening when the glow of the rotunda is juxtaposed against the darker, less illuminated brick facade.

The lobby is complemented by curved window sections along the southwest and northeast facades, which are capped with sloped standing-seam metal roofs. Pedestrian access to the entry is designated with well-defined walkways within the parking area and accented by special paving materials and landscaping.

Construction of the KPDX broadcast center was completed within 12 months. Transition from the old to the new facility was made without interrupting live programming.

Austin’s portfolio of Meredith projects includes KPHO, Phoenix, Arizona; KVVU, Henderson, Nevada; KCTV, Kansas City, Missouri; and WOFL, Orlando, Florida. Austin has also provided planning, design, engineering and construction management services for a digital broadcast facility for Meredith-owned CBS Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia.
