Project Description:

The Austin Company has completed multiple projects at Lockheed Martin’s Palmdale and Sunnyvale, California, campuses. Austin has completed over 500,000 SF in facilities services for Palmdale alone, supporting aircraft sub assembly, painting, avionics, research and development laboratory, corporate, general and engineering offices, and support activities.

Austin has served Lockheed Martin since 1987, with project services including planning, design, engineering and construction. Representative projects include:

Building 611 Expansion – Palmdale
One of Austin’s more recent projects is the 76,000 SF expansion of Building 611, supporting engineering and program offices. The project is a core and shell expansion of a two-story steel frame structure with basement, referred to as Module 4 of the 611 Complex. Design is complete with the construction start pending a future government program release. The facility was designed to achieve LEED® Silver Certification.

Division Headquarters Building 608 – Palmdale
Austin provided services for the 69,000 SF facility renovation and modernization of an existing two-story building. Austin renovated the building into a Department of Defense classified and secured administration, security and training center; upgrading the entire facility to meet current building code requirements, including the addition of stairs and an elevator. The facility also houses a classified, multiple-program flight simulator, with separately secured program areas. Austin provided design, engineering and construction services for this project.

Components Manufacturing Facility – Palmdale
This 200,000 SF facility develops and tests non-metallic military aircraft components. These components are fabricated from plastics, composite, and other non-metallic materials to replace standard metals in aircraft. Austin provided planning, design and engineering services.

Advanced Materials Laboratory – Palmdale
This 18,000 SF facility contains laboratories for electromagnetics research, along with structural, instrumentation, general chemistry, and ceramics research and development. The facility wasdesigned as an addition to the company’s existing non-metallics fabrication center, also designed and constructed by Austin. The heart of this facility is a fabrication laboratory, consisting of several individual labs centered around a fabrication area used for lay-up and fabrication of test samples. This unique space layout provides the flexibility to work on several unrelated top-secret projects while simultaneously maintaining individual project security. Austin provided planning, design and engineering services.

Machine Shop – Palmdale
Austin provided renovation services following the relocation of the Metallic Fabrication Center into a 125,000 SF facility, designed to provide flexibility in expanding the sheet metal shop and process area. The project included design and installation of HVAC, oil mist filtration, particulate exhaust, solvent exhaust, ovens, cranes, and special access requirements, and chilled and cooling water systems.

Electromagnetic & Avionics Lab – Palmdale
Austin designed and constructed mezzanine spaces for the new electromagnetic and avionics laboratory. At approximately 12,000 SF, this multi-level facility contains laboratories for electromagnetics, optics, fiber optics, RF (radio frequency), instrumentation, and general research and development. The facility is composed of several mezzanine levels on the north and south ends of an existing building. On the north, a new mezzanine structure was constructed between two existing levels for added floor space. Austin performed demolition and extensive remodeling to complete the work.

T-Fab Operations – Palmdale
Austin provided architectural design and engineering services for the relocation/consolidation of the T-Fab Operations from Building 636 into 645, including development of alternatives for a wastewater treatment facility to support the relocated dip tank operation.

Components Manufacturing Facility – Sunnyvale
This 250,000 SF, non-metallic components production facility includes extensive security, shielding, ACAS system, isolation/vibration control, sound control, instrumentation/air quality controls, hazardous materials, explosion control, UPS/emergency power and grounding, and other features that require compliance with appropriate codes and agencies, including process equipment, spray booths, and dust control.

The extensive mechanical system includes chilled and process cooling water, process vacuum, and deionized and hot water systems. Decentralized dust collectors and scrubbers with replaceable activated carbon absorption process complete the HVAC system. This highly-visible location required an architecturally-satisfying building design to complement the other existing building. Austin provided planning, design and engineering services from within an on-site task force office that was established to support the program.
