Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems C3 (Combined Computer Complex) / Systems Integration Lab

The Austin Company provided planning, design and engineering for a 40,000 SF “mission critical” data center in support of Northrop Grumman’s New Advanced Systems Development Center, located in El Segundo, California.

Project Description:

The Austin Company provided planning, design and engineering for a 40,000 SF “mission critical” data center in support of Northrop Grumman’s New Advanced Systems Development Center, located in El Segundo, California.

The center, described as an “incubator” of ideas for integrated strike warfare, houses a new Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL), Cyber Warfare Integration Network (CWIN) war simulation theater, Distinguished Visitor Center (DVC) and multiple Engineering, Logistics and Technology (EL&T) Laboratories, all designed by Austin as individual projects.

The “high availability” data center is comprised of 12" raised access flooring with static dissipative tile. HVAC units connect to a “house” chilled water system with redundancy (ductwork, louvers, controls) in critical areas, in addition to smoke purging. Fire suppression is controlled by an overhead wet system, which includes a pre-action system that requires two signals prior to discharge, preventing accidental discharge. Also, under floor suppression (Energen) was installed in critical areas, as well as under floor detection in all areas.

The entire project required Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) and Special Access Programs (SAP) for security, including STC 45 and 55 construction, white noise, motion sensors, access control (badge readers) and separation of power and communications.

Electrical systems included a new backup engine generator and uninterrupted power supply system (UPS).
