The Austin Company provided design and engineering for Southern California Edison’s 144,000 SF computer center in Irvine, California. The facility included 100,000 SF of accessed flooring, buffered computer room, microwave communications, card access security system, exterior and interior closed circuit camera TV system, bullet-resistant glass and UPS system. This data processing and customer service center serves as a back-up to a corporate facility in Rosemead, California.
The computer center provides capacity for mainframe computers and allows for maximum flexibility and quick access to the facility’s complex network of electronic and mechanical systems.
The 144,000 SF computer center, plus 28,000 SF four-building service center complex includes a full UPS system and standby generators. Cooling is provided with central chiller plant and local mounted air handling units.
Given the sensitive nature of the information processed at the data center, security was a critical design feature. The data center and service center are separated by a concrete block wall.
One of California’s largest utilities, Southern California Edison distributes electricity to nearly 4.5-million customers in central, coastal and Southern California. Southern California Edison is a subsidiary of Edison International.
