Project Description:

The University of Central Florida was in need of a new Computer Center. They engaged The Austin Company to provide structural, mechanical and electrical engineering services for the new Center.

The three-story, 56,000 SF Computer Science Center features a high-tech look with silver reflective glass and an interior atrium wall with multi-colored mosaic tiles that emulate pixels on a computer screen.

The $6.2-million facility serves as the central hub for campus communication connectivity and houses the Department of Computer Services, which provides interdisciplinary instruction and research to the University’s five colleges and three area campuses. It also links the University to local, state, national and international networks.

Thirty-four faculty offices and support space for the computer services and computer science departments and a 458-seat lecture hall occupy the first floor. Computer research labs allow for computer vision, virtual reality, intelligent systems, networking and parallel processing. The walls are constructed on top of the floor to permit access under the walls between each room. Perforated tile flooring allows cool air to move into the rooms.

Stand-alone direct expansion refrigeration and roof mounted air units provide the cooling system for the computer rooms’ cooled condensers.
