Our Leadership Team

The Austin Company's healthcare leadership team has more than 150 years of service to the healthcare industry, providing services and expertise on more than 500 acute care hospital projects.

We believe in a collaborative approach to our services that engages and empowers our clients to make informed decisions based on the scope of their facilities projects. Our team will help you to optimize the balance between cost and scope, resulting in an efficient building design that satisfies your facility objectives.

 

Mike Pierce, President

As President, Mike is responsible to Austin’s clients for the successful execution of all projects. Previously, Mike served as Senior Vice President and General Manager of Austin’s Cleveland office.

Mike began his career at Austin in 1980 as a mechanical engineer and has held various positions at the regional and corporate levels, prior to being named Austin's President in 2011.

 

Tom Bice, Vice President and General Manager

As General Manager, Tom is a principal representative of Austin Management for clients and projects. His responsibilities include overviewing project development and resource requirements. Tom’s experience in the healthcare industry spans more than 32 years in project management and design.

Previously, Tom led a regional Office for Henneman Engineering, Inc. as Partner-in-Charge and directed a successful business for 8 years. Tom holds Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Architectural Engineering from Oklahoma State University and is a registered Professional Engineer in 49 states.

 

Bill Wendland, Director of Design

Bill has over 40 years of experience as an architect, with more than 30 years focused on the healthcare industry. Bill has planned and designed hundreds of healthcare projects, including general and specialty hospitals, critical access hospitals and ambulatory care projects.

As Director of Design, Bill is responsible for the development of the program and design through project completion. He works closely with hospital management and physicians to convert needs into successful building solutions. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati and is a member of the AlA Academy on Architecture for Health. 

 

Jim Moore, Vice President and Project Executive

In this role, Jim works with clients and Austin’s in-house planners, architects, designers and engineers to define and manage project scope, plan reviews, budget and schedule. Jim has more than 34 years of experience in the design and construction industry, with more than 24 years focused exclusively in healthcare planning, design and construction.

In addition, Jim works with city and state agencies to ensure project compliance. In a previous role, Jim worked predominantly on OSHPD projects in California. He holds a Civil Engineering degree from Southern Illinois University.

 

David Cousley, Vice President - Western Region

David is responsible for continuing the growth of The Austin Method® and The Austin Company’s service offerings to hospitals and healthcare systems across the Western U.S. His experience includes over 25 years in the design and construction industry. David has worked on more than $200-million in completed projects, including a DBIA national award winner in 2012. He has utilized a variety of project delivery methods, including integrated project delivery.

David holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Illinois and Master of Architecture and Master of Business Administration degrees from Washington University, St. Louis. He resides in the St. Louis metro area.

 

Mike Koncki, Recruiting/Human Resources

Mike’s personnel expertise includes architecture, engineering and construction professional resource development in the healthcare industry. He has more than 20 years of experience in human resources, including consulting and recruiting.

Previously, Mike successfully operated The Koncki Group. His firm specialized in placing senior-level management within the architectural, engineering and construction industry. Mike’s network of professional resources reaches coast-to-coast and includes expertise with healthcare professionals in the A/E/C community.
