Northrop Grumman Manned Aircraft Design Center of Excellence Awarded LEED Silver Certification

The Austin Company provided planning, architectural design, engineering and construction management/ general contractor services for new program management and engineering facility.

Melbourne, FL, September 28, 2015 – Building 228, a program management and engineering building on Northrop Grumman’s Aircraft Design Center of Excellence campus in Melbourne, Florida, was recently awarded LEED® Silver Certification.

The Austin Company (www.theaustin.com), an international design and construction firm, served as architect, engineer and construction manager/general contractor for this new 210,000 SF facility for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (www.northropgrumman.com/aerospacesystems).

An important consideration in the building’s design and construction was incorporation of environmental and sustainability practices.

“At Northrop Grumman we’re committed to protect the environment and natural resources in the communities where we work and live,” said Bill Trillo, Director, Site Facilities Management East for Northrop Grumman. “Our newest building, 228, not only provides a safe and healthy workplace for our employees, it was constructed in a manner to minimize adverse impacts on our environment.”

The project earned LEED® Credit points across numerous categories, including: alternative transportation – preferred parking for low emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, water-efficient landscaping, water use reduction, optimized energy performance, green power, regionally sourced materials, recycled materials and construction waste management.

This LEED® certification is in addition to two awards previously presented to Building 228: Design-Build Institute of America Florida Region Merit Award and Engineering News Record Southeast Regional Best Projects Award of Merit.
