The Austin Company completed a major renovation project for Pfizer to support the company’s genomics research program.

The project was completed in Building 209, located in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan, and included the renovation of existing research laboratory space, the retrofit of cafeteria and office space into new laboratories, and associated mechanical system upgrades.

After successfully delivering architecture, programming and detailed engineering services, The Austin Company was requested to bid on constructing the project. Austin was selected based on a detailed implementation plan, competitive pricing and an excellent construction team. The Austin team self-performed all general trade disciplines and subcontracted the balance.

From demolition through detailed facility commissioning, the project was completed in a five-month window with a perfect safety record. A carefully implemented phasing plan allowed lab users continuous access to laboratory space throughout the construction process. Utility disruption and construction noise were carefully monitored to minimize disruption to research and vivarium operations located on floors below the retrofit.

Innovative design elements included a new flexible shelving and utility tower arrangement that allowed more shelving at staggered depths. In addition, the design team implemented a new vertical utility valve layout that allowed for more flexible counter space.

The Austin Company originally designed, engineered and constructed Building 209 for The Upjohn Company in the mid 1970s. Since that time, Austin has implemented multiple renovation and upgrade projects throughout the building to support changing research programs and advances in technology.

The Austin Company has designed, engineered and constructed state-of-the-art facilities for Pfizer for over 60 years.
